MMST was delighted to celebrate the arrival of Spring on Sunday 19 April through a special collaborative performance, ‘SongTrees-in-Spokane’! Together with MMST’s wonderful TransAtlantic partners, the Spokane Symphony (James Lowe, Musical Director and Jason Moody, Director of Education & Community Outreach; Associate Concertmaster) and the Spokane Public Libraries (Juan Juan Moses, Events Director), Chika Robertson (MMST CEO) and Mark Ross Clark (MMST Trustee), along with pianist Michael Kropf (Gonzaga University), highlighted local schools, friends and families of the Pacific Northwest through 8 of the community’s own special song choices, selected from 156 questionnaires. These were led by Mark Ross Clark and sung by the full audience. A popular Petting Zoo of instruments was available through Jason and the Symphony, and an inaugural Redbud tree (through the Susie Forest Project) was planted on site at the Shadle Park Library and blessed by Levi Horn and children from the Salish School, in honour of Kaz Yamauchi Ross (Chika’s Mother). This created a valuable new leaf for the SongTrees Programme, reflecting the strong musical and cultural roots of the Spokane community through an evocative trip down Memory Lane. This exciting new SongTrees-in-Spokane Community Music Archive will contribute to the Spokane Dementia Project, which stems from fruitful collaborative work during and since the pandemic between MMST and the Spokane Symphony.
