The benefits of singing together while moving
Mark Ross Clark, Director, ‘Music Moves!’ for Healthy Living
This experience is brought to you by Dr. Mark Ross Clark, Professor Emeritus of Music and Theatre and internationally certified Alexander Technique teacher. Dr. Clark has an international career in teaching both music and theatre courses, as well as leading ground-breaking Movement and Music Experiences in the UK and abroad. His unique programmes, which combine singing with physical therapy, have achieved such outstanding results in community centres that he has been awarded grants and awards from both regional arts council organisations and the National Endowment of the Arts in Washington.
Besides his training (and teaching) in music and theatre, Clark is an award-winning director who has published four books about the singing and acting integration. He started his career as a professional singer, performing solo concerts and recitals in the US and throughout the world with symphonies and opera companies. He sang in the Hollywood film studios and with the Carpenters while living in Los Angeles, and has been featured as soloist in popular venues such as the Hollywood Bowl with Ethel Merman, in tribute to Frederick Loewe (composer of My Fair Lady, Gigi, Brigadoon, etc).
Music Mind Spirit Trust is a local non-profit organization that is celebrating its 20th Anniversary, bringing music into concert halls, schools, care homes and diverse community centres including coffee houses and pubs. During COVID it co-created a global online programme with the NHS to reach out to families and homes. Musicians are partnered with doctors in medicine and science to explore the connections that exist and benefit us all. The Director and CEO of this charity is local Surrey/West Sussex resident Dr. Chika Robertson, who teaches violin at the Royal Academy of Music, presents workshops throughout the world, and has played violin with many of the greatest conductors/orchestras, including the Academy of St Martins-in-the-Fields and venues such as Glyndebourne and the Paris Opera, and many many more. Her Young Artist Musical Ambassadors (YAMA) have performed in numerous care homes, and among the projects she oversees is the British Opera Academy (BOA) and SongTrees, which utilises the cutting-edge music technology ‘X-System’ to research the role and use of music to benefit our health and general wellbeing. She is excited about MMST’s latest project: “Music Moves”, the ultimate Music and Movement Experience!
MUSIC MOVES! SONGBOOK
· I Want To Hold Your Hand
Oh, yeah, I’ll tell you something – I think you’ll understand,
Then I’ll say that something, I want to hold your hand.
I want to hold your hand, I want to hold your hand!
----(Guys) Oh, please, say to me, and let me be your man.
(ALL) And please, say to me, you’ll let me hold your hand,
Now let me hold your hand, I want to hold your hand (stop clapping).
---And when I touch you, I feel happy inside.
It’s such a feeling that my love – I can’t hide, etc…
---When I, say that something, I want to hold your hand, I want to hold your hand,
I want to hold your hand, I want to hold your hand!
· Michael, Row the Boat Ashore
-Michael row the boat a-shore, halleluiah,
Michael row the boat a-shore, halleluiah
-Sister help to trim the sail, halleluiah,
Brother, help to trim the sail, halleluiah.
-Jordan river is chilly and cold, halleluiah,
Chills the body, but not the soul, halleluiah.
-(Repeat) Michael row the boat a-shore, halleluiah,
Michael row the boat a-shore, halleluiah!
· I’ve Been Working on the Railroad
I’ve been working on the railroad, All the livelong day.
I’ve been working on the railroad, Just to pass the time away.
Don’t you hear the whistle blowing, Rise up so early in the morn;
Don’t you hear the captain shouting (SOLO): “Dinah, blow your horn!”
Dinah, won’t you blow? Dinah, won’t you blow? Dinah, won’t you blow your horn?
Dinah, won’t you blow? Dinah, won’t you blow? Dinah, won’t you blow your horn? REPEAT
Someone’s in the kitchen with Dinah , someone’s in the kitchen I know ---
Someone’s in the kitchen with Dinah, strummin’ on the old banjo,
And singing- Fi-Fie Fiddlie I O, Fi-Fie- Fiddlie I O…..
Fi-Fie- Fiddlie I O…. strummin’ on the old banjo!
(repeat start slow, and then get faster)
I’ve been working on the railroad, All the livelong day.
I’ve been working on the railroad, Just to pass the time away.
Don’t you hear the whistle blowing, Rise up so early in the morn;
Don’t you hear the captain shouting, “Dinah, blow your horn!”
· Those were the Days
Once upon a time there was a tavern,
Where we used to raise a glass or two.
Remember how we laughed away the hours,
And dreamed of all the great things we could do?
CHORUS: Those were the days, my friend, we thought they’d never end,
We’d sing and dance forever and a day.
We’d live the life we choose, we’d fight and never lose,
For we were young, and sure to have our way.
LA LA LA LA- LA LA, LA LA LA LA - LA LA, LA LA LA LA- LA LA LA LA LA LA –
LA LA LA LA- LA LA, LA LA LA LA- LA LA, LA LA LA LA- LA LA LA LA LA LA –
Then the busy years went rushing by us,
We lost our starry notions on the way.
If, by chance, I’d see you in the tavern,
We’d smile at one another and we’d say…
CHORUS: Those were the days, my friend, we thought they’d never end,
We’d sing and dance forever and a day.
We’d live the life we choose, we’d fight and never lose,
For we were young, and sure to have our way.
LA LA LA LA- LA LA, LA LA LA LA - LA LA,
LA LA LA LA- LA LA LA LA LA LA –
LA LA LA LA- LA LA, LA LA LA LA- LA LA,
LA LA LA LA- LA LA LA LA LA LA –
· Tomorrow
The sun’ll come out tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow…there’ll be sun…
Just thinking about tomorrow – clears away the cobwebs and the sorrow…til there’s none.
When I’m stuck with a day that’s grey and cloudy…I just stick out my chin, and grin, and say,
Oh the sun’ll come out tomorrow, so you gotta hang on til tomorrow…come what may…
Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya tomorrow, you’re only a day away (REPEAT for big ending)
TOMORROW, TOMORROW, I LOVE YA TOMORROW, YOU’RE ONLY A DAY A-WAY!
· Blue Moon
(Snapping, doo-wopping)
Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone, without a dream in my heart, without a love of my own.
Blue Moon, you knew just what I was there for, you heard me saying a prayer for, someone I really could care for…
Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone, without a dream in my heart, without a love of my own.
Blue Moon, you knew just what I was there for, you heard me saying a prayer for, someone I really could care for…
(solo) And then there suddenly appeared before me, the only one my arms would ever hold,
I heard somebody whisper, “Please, adore me.” And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold!
Blue Moon, now I’m not so longer alone, without a dream in my heart, without a love of my own.
· Daisy Chorus
(chorus) Dai-sy, Dai-sy, give me your an-swer, do! I’m half cra-zy all for the love of you!
It won’t be a styl-ish mar-riage, I can’t afford a car-riage.
But you’ll look sweet- upon the seat- of a bi-cy-cle built for two.
• OH, The Grand Old Duke of York
OH, The Grand old Duke of York, He had ten thousand men,
He marched them up to the top of the hill, And he marched them down again.
And when they were up, they were up, And when they were down, they were down,
And when they were only halfway up, They were neither up nor down.
• It’s a Long Way to Tipperary
Up to mighty London came an Irish lad one day
All the streets were paved with gold, so everyone was gay,
Singing songs of Piccadilly, Strand and Leicester Square
‘Til Paddy got excited and he shouted to them there:
“It’s a long way to Tipperary, it’s a long long way to go,
It’s a long way to Tipperary- to the sweetest girl I know.
Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Leicester Square,
It’s a long way to Tipperary, But my heart is right there.”
• When You’re Smiling
When you're smiling when you're smiling
The whole world smiles with you
When you're laughing oh when you're laughing
The sun comes shining through
But when you're crying you bring on the rain
So stop your sighing be happy again
Keep on smiling cause when you're smiling
The whole world smiles with you
